EXTREME WEATHER preceded collapse of Maya civilization

Decades of extreme weather crippled, and ultimately decimated, first the political culture and later the human population of the ancient Maya, according to a new study by an interdisciplinary team of researchers that includes two University of California, Davis, scientists.
The collapse of the Maya is one of the world’s most enduring mysteries. Now, for the first time, researchers have combined a precise climatic record of the Maya environment with a precise record of Maya political history to provide a better understanding of the role weather had in the civilization’s downfall.

GOBIERNO FEDERAL extiende ayuda directa de FEMA a los 21 condados de New Jersey
Trenton, NJ - El gobernador Chris Christie anunció hoy que el gobierno federal ha extendido la asistencia a los 21 condados de New Jersey debido a las consecuencias del desastre para los habitantes de New Jersey afectados por el huracán Sandy, por lo que se les proporcionará asistencia directa a las personas y sus hogares. NCAR-Wyoming Supercomputing Center opens
CHEYENNE—The NCAR-Wyoming Supercomputing Center (NWSC), which houses one of the world’s most powerful supercomputers dedicated to the geosciences, officially opens today.
Scientists at the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) and universities across the country are launching a series of initial scientific projects on the center’s flagship, a 1.5-petaflop IBM supercomputer known as Yellowstone. SCIENTISTS AT UNIVERSITY OF RHODE ISLAND find there is one-third less life on Earth
NARRAGANSETT, R.I. – Estimates of the total mass of all life on Earth should be reduced by about one third, based on the results of a study by a team of scientists at the University of Rhode Island’s Graduate School of Oceanography and colleagues in Germany.
The research was published this week in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Science.
According to previous estimates, about one thousand billion tons of carbon is stored in living organisms, of which 30 percent is in single-cell microbes in the ocean floor and 55 percent reside in land plants. WOMEN USE EMOTICONS MORE than men in text messaging
HOUSTON – Women are twice as likely as men to use emoticons in text messages, according to a new study from Rice University.
Emoticons are graphic symbols that use punctuation marks and letters to represent facial expressions to convey a person’s mood, help provide context to a person’s textual communication and clarify a message that could otherwise possibly be misconstrued.
The study, “A Longitudinal Study of Emoticon Use in Text Messaging from Smartphones,” used smartphone data from men and women over six months and aggregated 124,000 text messages. The participants were given free iPhones to use for the test period but didn’t know what researchers were investigating.

Funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF) and hosted by Mozilla, the challenge called for stellar application, or "app," ideas from anywhere in the world that would advance national priorities such as health care, public safety, clean energy and transportation.
